Project Description

21 March 2011 - Somalia continues to be home to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The conflict between the United Nations/African Union-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the Islamist insurgent group Al Shabab continued through 2010 leading to both new and continued displacement of civilians from Mogadishu and other conflict-affected areas. It is estimated that two million Somalis (roughly 25% of the total population) require some form of humanitarian assistance in 2011. Of these 1.5 million people have been displaced from their homes. With CIDA support Oxfam Canada is helping to provide water and sanitation services to existing and newly displaced persons in the Afgooye Corridor adjacent to Mogadishu through the construction repair rehabilitation and/or expansion of water points and distribution systems and the construction or rehabilitation of latrines and solid waste disposal points.
