Project Description
More than four decades of internal violence has resulted in Colombia dealing with one of the largest displaced populations in the world with more than three million internally displaced persons (IDPs). The Department of Nariño is one of the main destination areas for displaced populations where living conditions are extremely precarious and health services are lacking. The objective of this project is to reduce prevalence of water and sanitation-related diseases among internally displaced populations and host communities affected by the armed conflict in the southern Colombian Department of Nariño. CIDA’s contribution is supporting Action Against Hunger to maintain and improve the health status of vulnerable persons in conflict-affected populations in southern Colombia particularly in the Department of Nariño. Project activities include: the distribution of potable water household water tanks water filters and hygiene kits; the rehabilitation of collective sanitation systems; and the rehabilitation of latrines and water supply systems and hygiene promotion.
