Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). UN Women uses these funds along with those of other donors to support its core mandate and functions. UN Women's mandate is focused on the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development human rights humanitarian action and peace and security interventions. UN Women works to support global standards for gender equality and helps countries meet these standards by providing expertise and financial support. Canada's support helps to promote equality between women and men and tackle discrimination against women and girls globally.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of 2011 include: an increased number of women elected to office in five countries including a doubling of the number of women mayors elected in Mexico; passage of a law requiring gender parity in candidate lists for political parties in Tunisia (the most progressive parity law in the Arab region); the creation of the Egyptian Women’s Charter and the Egyptian Women’s Union in the aftermath of the 2011 revolution; more than 5 000 women in Ethiopia initiated or expanded businesses as a result of business training and/or micro credit; a commitment to gender responsive budgeting accompanied by significant increases in resources for gender equality in the national budgets of six countries; improved service delivery standards in 37 countries to end violence against women; 270 000 individuals/organizations from 221 countries were using the UN Women’s Virtual Knowledge Centre to End Violence Against Women and Girls; 15% of all UN managed peacekeeping funds are now earmarked for gender equality and women’s empowerment; and a robust accountability framework for gender equality and women’s empowerment across the UN system was approved and endorsed by UN Chief Executives.
