Project Description
CIDA's contribution to the Least Developed Countries Fund for Adaptation to Climate Change (LDCF) aims to support least developed countries (LDCs) to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change through both immediate and longer-term adaptation measures in development policies plans programs projects and actions. Amongst other activities the fund mainly provides support for the preparation of National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) and for the implementation of NAPA priorities in LDCs. In the recent revised programming Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change for 2010-2013 the Fund is now scaling up its programmatic approach to increase the resilience of vulnerable countries in: (i) climate-resilient development (ii) implementing Adaptation Action and (iii) estimating costs of Adaptation to Climate Change. The LDCF is mandated under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Operating under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) it addresses the needs of the 49 LDCs that are especially vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2016 include: the Fund assisted 51 least developed countries in the preparation and implementation of their National Adaptation Programs of Action to identify and address immediate needs to adapt to climate change. Of the 79 projects under implementation or completed results achieved include: (1) 5 035 697 people directly benefited from reduced vulnerability to climate change; (2) 380 017 people were trained in various aspects of climate change adaptation; (3) 1 186 398 hectares of land were brought under more resilient management; (4) 82 national policies plans or frameworks in 15 least developed countries were strengthened or developed to better address climate change risks and adaptation; and (5) access to climate information services was expanded in 32 least developed countries.
