Project Description
11 November 2010 - Haiti is coping with a cholera outbreak which has killed hundreds of people to date and infected thousands. The departments with confirmed cases include Artibonite Centre Nord Nord-Ouest and Ouest (Port-au-Prince). This project aims to contain the spread of cholera while supporting the medical response to treat confirmed cases of the disease. CIDA is supporting Oxfam-Québec to provide clean water to affected populations and hospitals treating cholera patients. Public mass information campaigns are being conducted on how to prevent the spread of cholera and a disease and water quality surveillance system to monitor the progression of the disease is being implemented. Oxfam-Québec is also procuring medical supplies and plastic mattresses to support hospitals as well as oral rehydration treatments and hygiene supplies to be distributed to the affected population.
