Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. CGIAR’s mandate is to reduce poverty and hunger improve human health and nutrition and enhance ecological resilience through high-quality international agriculture research partnership and leadership. Canada’s support to the CGIAR contributes to greater food security and improvements in human health and nutrition.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of 2010 include: improved varieties of common beans in East Central and Southern Africa produce 30-50 percent more food and are resistant to multiple diseases and have been adopted by 5.3 million rural households over the past 15 years; 50 new drought-tolerant maize varieties have been planted on a total of 1 million hectares across East and Southern Africa producing 20-50% more food; a new flood-tolerant rice variety that can produce more food even when submerged in water for two weeks was disseminated to 100 000 Indian farmers within a year after its release in 2009; new information and tools provided by the CGIAR to conservationists during the 1990s are now being used to monitor some 37 million hectares of forest globally improving forest management and contributing to more sustainable livelihoods for forest dwellers.
