Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). UNAIDS uses these funds along with other donors funding to achieve its mandate. As the United Nation’s (UN) principal advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS UNAIDS leads strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV providing treatment and care for people living with the disease reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the epidemic’s impact worldwide. Canada’s support to UNAIDS helps to maximize the reach of CIDA’s investments and enables CIDA to influence the development and implementation of global HIV-related policies and practices.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by UNAIDS through the support of CIDA and other international donors as of December 2011 include: forty-five countries put in place improved strategic and operational plans that are evidence-informed prioritized costed and focused on efficiency and effectiveness; universal access consultations organized in 117 countries and 7 regions providing an opportunity for stakeholders and constituencies to take stock of progress made identify obstacles and decide what needs to be done in order to achieve universal access and the Millennium Development Goals; Global Plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and Keeping Their Mothers Alive and Joint Strategic Action Framework launched and implementation supported to accelerate the scale-up of voluntary male medical circumcision; normative guidance and technical support provided to countries to accelerate access to treatment through which an estimated 1.35 million more people access treatment in low- and middle-income countries.
