Project Description
26 March 2010 - An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck at a depth of 35 km near the coast of Chile on February 27 and was followed by a tsunami that affected the Pacific Basin. This was the country's largest earthquake in 25 years affecting approximately two million people. Immediate needs are for essential relief items emergency health and medical care shelter materials and access to safe water and sanitation services. CIDA's contribution is supporting World Vision to help improve the health and physical security of those affected by the earthquake with a particular emphasis on addressing the needs of the most vulnerable children. Activities focus on distributing shelter materials and hygiene supplies; improving access to clean water; and providing child protection services including through the establishment of child friendly spaces and emergency education support. The project is expected to reach an estimated 31 200 beneficiaries.
