Project Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). COL uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. COL’s mandate is to help governments and institutions expand the scope scale and quality of learning by using new approaches and technologies for open and distance learning. COL applies open and distance learning to programs in grade schooling teacher education higher education skills development farming and the development of healthy communities. Canada’s support to COL contributes to finding durable solutions to education challenges and improving the quality of learning in developing countries across the Commonwealth.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved in 2011 include: 300 000 girls and boys in 10 countries attended 12 open schools; more than 350 000 teachers and teacher educators were trained across the Commonwealth; increased access to quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through open and distance learning in seven institutions in three African countries; 50 000 women and men learn daily through mobile phones in Asia and Africa; 8 000 active learners and an estimated 100 000 listeners in 10 countries have new opportunities to learn about Mother and Child Health HIV/AIDS non-communicable diseases and environmental health; eight institutions in three regions are using open education resources (OER) for their curricula; 150 Community Radio stations were established in India and Bangladesh; six institutions in six countries are offering courses of the Virtual University of Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC); the Commonwealth Executive Master in Business Administration/Master in Public Administration programme reached 9 204 learners in nine countries.
