Project Description
November 2010 - Somalia continues to be home to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world as ongoing fighting between the African Union-backed government and Al Shabab rebels forces ever more people from their homes and prevents those already displaced from returning. Current estimates are that some 2 million Somalis (roughly 25% of the population) now require some form of humanitarian assistance. Canadian support to this Oxfam Canada project in Somalia is helping it to provide much-needed water and sanitation to an estimated 282 000 people displaced by the fighting in Mogadishu and now living in the Afgooye corridor one of the largest concentrations of displaced persons on the planet.
