Project Description
October 9 2009 - Typhoon Ketsana hit the central part of Vietnam on September 29 with wind gusts of up to 160 km/h. It was the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam since 1999. As of October 9 the human toll of Ketsana in Vietnam was 170 dead 14 missing and up to 3 million people affected of whom more than 150 000 have been left homeless. Through this project Plan International Canada provides emergency relief for 4 660 families affected by the typhoon and floods in eight communes in the district of Da Krong Quang Tri province. Quang Tri province is a mountainous area and 80% of the population is made up of ethnic minorities. With a 45% poverty rate the population of Da Krong is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. The specific objectives of the project are to provide life-saving support to families affected by the typhoon especially children and young people through the provision of clean water and safe shelter.
