Project Description
October 6 2009 - On September 29 an earthquake measuring 8.3 struck between Samoa and American Samoa in the Pacific. On October 2 a second earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck between Samoa and Tonga. A tsunami caused by the first quake hit American Samoa the south-eastern coastline of Samoa and the northern islands of Tonga. CIDA's contribution allows the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in partnership with the Samoan Red Cross Society (SCRS) to assist up to 15 000 people (approximately 3 000 families) for 12 months in disaster-affected areas. Support to beneficiaries is provided in the following sectors: distribution of non-food items (hygiene kits kitchen sets clothing bedding jerry cans and other household items) health water and sanitation and shelter.
