Project Description

October 9 2009 - Typhoon Ketsana passed over the Philippines on September 26 2009 bringing massive destruction and causing floods in Manila and other areas of the northern Philippines before making landfall in Vietnam. An estimated 3 million people have been affected by the storm and more than 9 000 homes have either been destroyed or damaged. Emergency needs of those affected include food assistance clean water proper sanitation facilities basic health services and basic household items. With CIDA's support the World Food Programme (WFP) is fulfilling its mandate of helping to address hunger and malnutrition. Specifically CIDA's grant provides for emergency food assistance to vulnerable populations affected by the flooding. Through the distribution of regular and supplementary food rations WFP expects to provide immediate and life-sustaining food assistance to an estimated 700 000 vulnerable people for three months.
