Project Description

This contribution represents Canada’s institutional support to the ninth replenishment of the Asian Development Fund (ADF) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Established in 1973 the Asian Development Fund provides low interest rate loans and grants to the poorest countries in the Asia-Pacific region. For the period 2009-2012 these funds were used for infrastructure policy support and reform health and education environmentally sustainable investments good governance and capacity building for development management and regional cooperation. Canada is the 5th largest non-borrowing shareholder of the Asian Development Bank (as of December 2011) and is the 6th largest contributor overall to the Asian Development Fund.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved from January 2010 to December 2013 include: (1) supporting programs to improve schools including building or upgrading classrooms and training over 700 000 teachers benefitting approximately 17.1 million students; (2) connecting almost 1.1 million new households to electricity; (3) installing or upgrading 5 300 km of energy transmission lines and 13 000 km of distribution lines; (4) building or upgrading 31 000 km of national highways and provincial district and rural roads and 75 km of railways; (5) contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions of approximately 600 000 million tons of CO2 equivalent a year; (6) installing or upgrading 16 000 km of water supply pipe and providing over 2 million new households with water supply and nearly 300 000 new households with sanitation services; (7) improving more than 2 million hectares of land through irrigation services drainage and flood management; and (8) opening or maintaining some 2 million microfinance accounts and 9 700 small and medium sized enterprise loan accounts.
