Project Description
Ongoing conflict in Sudan has left millions in need of humanitarian assistance. Overall more than 5.2 million Sudanese are internally displaced and more than 500 000 are living abroad as refugees. In Darfur an estimated 4.2 million people are reliant on some form of international assistance due to ongoing fighting between government forces and rebel groups. Of these an estimated 2.7 million have been forced from their homes. With CIDA support the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is helping to assist vulnerable populations directly affected by conflict (primarily though not exclusively in Darfur) through the provision of food clean water and sanitation services emergency health care shelter and protection. Specific planned activities in Darfur include providing emergency food rations shelter and basic household items to 120 000 people; rehabilitating water systems serving up to 600 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs); continuing to support ten health clinics and rehabilitating two others; and continuing to provide all essential services for 137 000 residents of Gereida IDP camp in South Darfur.
