Project Description
The WHO Multi-Country Tuberculosis (TB) Control Program is managed by the WHO Stop TB Department. The program focuses on four key interventions including: 1) strengthening TB diagnosis and case management systems in large urban hospital settings where a significant proportion of cases are misdiagnosed and not appropriately treated for TB; 2) diagnosing close contacts of TB patients (e.g. household members) in urban areas; 3) active screening of high risk groups; and 4) TB/HIV collaboration.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2013) include: (1) built and strengthened sustainable linkages across the health system for tuberculosis (TB) care in five countries (Democratic Republic of Congo Ghana Swaziland the Philippines and Vietnam) in order to increase early case detection of tuberculosis; (2) developed and implemented country-specific scalable approaches for engaging large hospitals in TB care and control; (3) facilitated the scaling up of hospital engagement in national TB strategic plans; (4) implemented systematic screening for TB among high risk groups especially people living with HIV/AIDS; (5) detected 33 680 additional TB cases as a result of project activities significantly surpassing the project target of 28 500; and (6) demonstrated that large hospitals can contribute substantially to increasing TB case detection and should be effectively linked to national TB programmes. These have contributed to reinforcing sustainability through the integration of project interventions in national TB strategic plans.
