Project Description
Within the span of a few weeks from the end of August to the beginning of September Hurricanes Gustav and Ike as well as tropical storm Fay swept across Cuba affecting 1.5 million people and destroying or damaging approximately 500 000 houses. Assessments indicate that the priority humanitarian needs are water food shelter materials and hygiene kits. CIDA's contribution is used to help CARE assist 3 400 vulnerable households in Holguin province and the Isle of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) through the provision of emergency relief kits. These kits which include basic items such as plastic buckets jerry cans cooking utensils and soap provide vulnerable households with access to basic domestic and hygiene supplies to help meet basic human needs.
