Project Description
Intensified armed conflict between Pakistani armed forces and armed groups during the months of August and September 2008 left hundreds of thousands in need of emergency humanitarian assistance in Pakistan. Initial estimates indicate that over 200 000 people have been displaced due to the violence. CIDA's contribution is supporting the World Food Programme (WFP) to help save lives and avert the starvation of displaced populations and to prevent malnutrition among children and lactating mothers affected by the armed conflict. Through the project WFP is distributing food rations to the most vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) registered in camps and living with host families in Dir (Lower/Upper) Malakand Mardan Charsadda Peshawar and Swabi districts. The operation expects to cover the emergency food assistance needs of an estimated 150 000 vulnerable people for an average of four months.
