Project Description
The focus of this project is to deliver vitamin A and other essential front-line health and nutrition services including immunizations and bednets in order to accelerate progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing child mortality by 50% by 2015. Vitamin A supplementation to children under five is a high impact and cost-effective intervention that substantially reduces mortality. This program delivers essential front-line health and nutrition services through Child Health Days and Weeks outreach events designed to bring these life-saving interventions to entire communities.
Progress & Results Achieved
HKI delivered over 145 million additional vitamin A supplementation (VAS) with DFATD support. The cost per additional dose was $0.14. 381 222 lives were saved through this intervention at an average cost of US$ 43.49 per life saved. Selected results: -In Burkina Faso over 10 million children under the age of 5 were reached with VAS through the Child Health Days platform . The post-event coverage (PEC) survey conducted after the first round in 2013 concluded that 96.9% of children in the Eastern Region were reached with no significant differences between boys and girls. -In Ivory Coast a total of 51 704 community health workers were trained to support VAS and de-worming activities. -In Mozambique results from the PEC survey implemented in the Mandlakazy and Chibuto provinces indicate that VAS coverage of children 6-59 months is 85.3% after HKI’s intervention. Over 11 million children were reached during the life-span of the project. -In Niger over 67 million children received VAS through this initiative reaching coverage of over 92% of the targeted population (2012 PEC survey).
