Project Description
Despite the signing of the 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement the western Sudanese region continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis due to conflict. Fighting between government forces and various rebel groups has resulted in an estimated 4.2 million people (of a total regional population of six million) being reliant on some form of international aid. Of these an estimated 2.45 million have been displaced from their homes and 3 million or more rely on WFP for their daily meals. With CIDA support United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides assistance to refugees and IDPs affected by the ongoing conflict in Darfur. Specifically it contributes to a safer environment in IDP settlements; strengthens protective mechanisms and increase capacity to respond to the needs of vulnerable groups; supports the creation of an environment which is conducive to voluntary return in safety and dignity and which reduces the risks of further displacement; and facilitates humanitarian assistance through camp coordination and camp management.
