Project Description
On May 2 2008 the Category 3 Cyclone Nargis made landfall in southern Burma (Myanamar) before moving northeast to hit Rangoon leaving widescale devastation in its wake. Humanitarian needs remain high following Cyclone Nargis. The number of people affected by the cyclone is estimated at approximately 2.4 million with close to 140 000 dead or missing. Critical needs of the affected population are shelter water and sanitation emergency health and food. Canada's support totalling $2 567 550 helps Save the Children Canada provide services to 157 000 people including 70 500 children in the Ayeyarwaddy area of Burma (Myanmar). Save the Children deploys approximately 200 health care professionals to deliver stationary and boat-based medical services to remote communities in the Ayeyarwaddy Division of Burma (Myanmar). More than 250 health outreach workers are deployed for health monitoring community protection nutrition and hygiene promotion. Twenty child-friendly spaces are created provide psychosocial support physical and health protection to vulnerable children. To address malnutrition of infant and young children 360 peer educators 22 counsellors and medical professionals provide therapeutic feeding counselling and education.
