Project Description

Violence and conflict in Iraq have led to the displacement of people both within the country and to neighbouring countries in the region. This displacement along with diminished access to basic services has led to a serious humanitarian situation inside Iraq and to growing needs among vulnerable Iraqis living in Syria. While the overall level of violence in Iraq has reportedly declined there is still a high level of conflict in the country and many people will not return until the security situation stabilizes further and there are guarantees for their protection. CIDA’s contribution is helping the World Food Programme (WFP) provide assistance to the displaced in Iraq or those fleeing to neighbouring countries through the distribution of safe sufficient and appropriate food. Activities also focus on enabling households that are not yet destitute to obtain sufficient appropriate food without having to sacrifice further household assets putting their future food security at risk. The operation expects to meet the food aid needs of an estimated 1.11 million beneficiaries.
