Democratic Republic of Congo Emergency Sanitation and Protection - Save the Children 2008

Despite elections in 2006 and an overall increase in stability in much of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the situation remains volatile in the eastern part of the country particularly in North Kivu. It is estimated that some 1.3 million people remain displaced in the country. This includes some 500 000 who have fled their homes and livelihoods in eastern DRC in the last year two-thirds of them in North Kivu. To enhance protection of children in Mweso and Masisi North Kivu Save the Children improves the physical environment within schools as well as increasing awareness of child protection issues and health and hygiene practices.
