Project Description
There are some 212 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the northern part of the Central African Republic many of whom have been displaced for a number of years. Limited humanitarian actors and the security situation have repeatedly limited the assistance available to these population. In 2007 to respond to this concern the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) opened two new field offices and provided enhanced assistance to the displaced including protection assistance. In 2008 the UNHCR continues to provide assistance to some 102 000 displaced individuals in the northwest of the country and provides a monitoring function for the 110 000 displaced persons living in the northeast of the country. The primary focus of UNHCR interventions is to enhance the protection of the internally displaced by increasing field presence monitoring and sensitization providing material assistance and conducting individual counselling.
