Project Description
This project supports the International Program for Development Education Training (IPDET) a four-week executive training program in development education for evaluators from developing countries held annually at Carleton University from mid-June to mid-July. IPDET provides managers and practitioners with the generic tools they require to evaluate development policies programs and projects at local national regional and global levels. This project includes annual scholarships for key decision-makers from developing country governments and non-governmental organizations; co-sponsorship of a regional IPDET training session in the field; and the design and operation of an innovative distance-coaching program to support alumni after the IPDET training. IPDET is managed jointly by Carleton University and the World Bank Group’s Independent Evaluation Group.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2011) include: Since its inception the International Program for Development Education Training (IPDET) has trained over 2 000 evaluators from 75 countries around the world in development evaluation methods designed to reform and improve the effectiveness of their agencies. In the period from 2008 to 2010 IPDET trained over 600 participants. IPDET training has contributed to the development of evaluation networks in several developing countries. For example in Sri Lanka several IPDET alumni have been informally involved in helping to develop a local evaluation network through participation in ongoing evaluation planning and local professional development activities. Results from the last impact evaluation show that a high degree of the knowledge of monitoring and evaluation skills learned at IPDET is being transferred to the participant’s work environment. For example IPDET alumni in Botswana have had an impact on monitoring and evaluation in the country. Many Botswana nationals in key positions have been sent to IPDET for training and IPDET co-directors have provided additional professional development to interested government officials in the region.
