Project Description
A series of natural disasters in 1995–1996 environmental challenges and a declining agricultural base have rendered the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea unable to meet the population’s basic food needs. Most vulnerable groups continue to face significant food shortages malnutrition rates remain high and there is a continued need for interventions designed to provide micronutrient-fortified foods for vulnerable groups such as women and children. CIDA’s contribution is used to help the World Food Programme (WFP) support the government's efforts to promote the health and nutritional status of the most vulnerable groups; support the government's efforts to ensure long-term food security through sustainable livelihoods and community-based initiatives; and support the government's long-term strategy for food security by building capacities for local food production and enabling regions to establish and manage food assistance and hunger reduction programmes through local food production. The operation is expected to reach an estimated 1.9 million beneficiaries.
