Project Description

In 2009 Canada committed $19.2 million CDN to contribute to the EIF Trust Fund. Total pledges by all donors amounted to US$251 million to be disbursed over a five year period.

Expected Results

EIF results are describable and/or measurable changes that are derived from funded projects (Tier 1 and 2) at the country level. There are four outcomes for the projects (with various sub indicators): - Sufficient institutional and management capacity building in EIF countries to formulate and implement trade-related strategies and implementation plans; - EIF countries mainstream trade into their national development strategies and national development plans; - Coordinated delivery of trade-related resources by donors and implementing agencies to implement country priorities following the adoption of the Diagnostic Trade Integration Strategy (DTIS) Action plan; and - EIF Countries secure resources in support of initiatives that address DTIS Action Matrix priorities. To measure results the EIF measures the percentage of countries that have reported to have met the outcomes above.

Progress & Results Achieved

During the period 2009-2014 the number of EIF approved projects and commitments were 108 projects covering 44 EIF countries. Key results for the EIF include: - The National Implementation Units (NIU) upgrading their skills at performing fiduciary functions with 73% being at least satisfactory by the end of 2013 (compared to 3% at baseline); - 78% of EIF Countries reported to have integrated trade into their poverty reduction strategy papers or national development plans while 17 EIF countries have integrated trade into their production sector strategies; - 57% of EIF countries have established trade strategies; - 32 countries have established high-level public-private sector consultative mechanisms to dialogue on trade policy issues; and - 29 countries have mechanisms for government and donor consultations on trade matters. Many examples of projects undertaken by EIF are included in their annual reports and on their website.
