Project Description
CIDA is contributing to WHO’s efforts to achieve universal access to HIV prevention treatment and care including a particular emphasis on the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Fifteen million dollars of this grant has been allocated specifically to support country level basic PMTCT programs. This grant supplements CIDA’s previous support to WHO’s efforts to scale-up access to HIV prevention treatment and care as well as the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 6 to combat HIV/AIDS.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2009 include: (1) PMTCT training for approximately 2 300 health workers community leaders and volunteers; (2) an additional 2 400 HIV infections averted at CIDA-funded sites in Lesotho Swaziland Zambia and Zimbabwe; and sensitization and advocacy activities with policy makers and community leaders around the importance of PMTCT. PMTCT activities are being incorporated into existing national plans and strategies with Ministries of Health as the main implementing partner.
