Project Description
This program aims to reduce mortality among children under the age of five in African countries with high rates of malaria. Since the mosquitoes that carry malaria mostly bite at night sleeping under long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) greatly reduces the chance of contracting this potentially fatal disease. This program builds on CIDA's previous support to the Canadian Red Cross to procure LLINs and deliver them to children under the age of five in multiple African countries. This program also delivers life-saving modern malaria treatment artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs) to children under the age of five in two districts in Kenya. The program builds on previous CIDA-supported Canadian Red Cross malaria programs that delivered malaria prevention interventions to pregnant women and children under five.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2011) include: the percentage of children under the age of five treated for malaria within 24 hours of possible infection increased from 9% to 90% in two districts; and in total 18 291 children were treated for malaria by community health workers. With adequate training and supervision the number of community health workers misusing medicine was reduced over the course of the project. The project also supported a symposium to document results achieved lessons learned and operational research undertaken as a means to determine the feasibility of scaling up the training of community health workers to deliver malaria treatment. These results contributed to reducing the number of children dying of malaria in Kenya.
