Project Description
The project aims to improve the physical and mental health of the most vulnerable living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions. The project focuses on the second phase of Grand Challenges Canada’s innovation platform which includes testing and piloting innovations developing strategic partnerships leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. Grants of up to CAD 1 million are awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector international organizations and LMIC governments.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for the project include: (1) increased effectiveness of innovators in scaling and sustaining their innovations; and (2) increased use of innovations by health sector intermediaries and beneficiaries in LMICs.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2019) include: (1) 16 mental health innovations funded by this project have reached 33 703 people (of which 66% are women) living in low- and middle- income countries; (2) there have been measurable improvements in the mental health of 22 392 people (of which 64% are women); (3) 8 698 intermediaries have been trained and are now using innovative mental health interventions in their communities; (4) over 727 000 people have been screened for mental health disorders; and (5) for every dollar invested by GAC via Grand Challenges Canada an additional $2.80 has been invested by other partners.
