Project Description

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat plays a coordination and facilitative role for the SUN Movement in order to improve nutrition outcomes in developing countries particularly for women and children under five in the 56 member countries and states. Project activities include: (1) monitoring and tracking country level progress;(2) linking the various member networks of the SUN Movement with country requests for support; (3) mobilizing resources to address malnutrition; and (4) ensuring the activities of the networks including United Nations Business and Civil Society networks are aligned with the Movement. Building on the achievements of the first two phases of funding (2012 and 2014) this initiative supports the operationalization of the new SUN movement strategy for 2016-2020 including transition of the Movement to its new phase. This initiative supports the development of roadmaps for each member network and ensures continuous support to the SUN countries and networks to achieve better results.

Expected Results

The expected results for this project include: (1) enhanced political attention to malnutrition; (2) increased investments in nutrition; (3) stakeholders respond to the needs of SUN countries in a timely and effective way and contribute to responsive and aligned assistance to SUN countries; and (4) increased capacity of SUN countries to bring together national stakeholders and implement effective actions to scale up nutrition.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2018) include: (1) the Secretariat advanced its work on gender equality and women’s socio-economic empowerment food systems and nutrition in fragile situations and leveraged finance for nutrition; (2) 53 countries are using inclusive platforms to rally all stakeholders behind one vision one plan one budget and one monitoring and evaluation system to achieve their goals; (3) the Monitoring Evaluation Accountability and Learning (MEAL) System was launched and used to compare country data at the global level which helps inform reports advocacy and implementation; (4) the Secretariat continued to strengthen capacity in countries to support multisectoral nutrition plans which resulted in 15 new country plans in 2018; (5) three countries and one Indian state joined the SUN movement from 2016 to 2018; (6) in 2017-2018 nine member countries saw a decrease in rates of childhood stunting; and (7) the Secretariat contributed to a range of high profile global events to increase nutrition profile including the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Assembly.
