Project Description

The project aims to increase the capacity of the Government of Ethiopia to efficiently implement and scale up the Agricultural Growth Program-Phase II (AGP II) which is designed to increase agricultural production productivity and better link smallholder farmers to markets. Activities include: (1) training on the job coaching to the Ministry of Agriculture’s human resources at the federal regional zonal and indirectly at the district level; (2) support to establish efficient coordination and consultations mechanisms with all relevant stakeholders including the Ministry of Trade; Recruitment of Canadian and local expertise to provide specific technical support particularly for the new dimensions of AGP II.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) AGP II coordination unit within the Ministry of Agriculture and key implementing agencies have increased ability to strengthen institutional capacity for quality delivery of AGP-II using gender-responsive approaches processes and methodologies ; (2) AGP-II coordination unit within the Ministry of Agriculture and key implementing agencies effectively manage implement and coordinate AGP-II and integrate cross-cutting themes including gender and the environment.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) the training of 651 Government of Ethiopia staff (123 women) at the federal regional and zonal levels to strengthen the capacity of these individuals to effectively deliver high-quality agricultural growth programming across Ethiopia; (2) the establishment and training of approximately 150 (20 women) federal and regional master facilitators within the Government of Ethiopia who then cascaded their training on agricultural production to 100 farmers at the community level; (3) job-embedded support has been provided to an additional 200 Government of Ethiopia staff in various areas such as agricultural-sensitive workshops agriculture sector planning sessions joint monitoring missions of the Government of Ethiopia’s Agricultural Growth Program etc.; and (4) the creation of gender and nutrition guidance documents and checklists for Government of Ethiopia staff to promote the integration of these cross-cutting issues in the Government of Ethiopia’s annual planning for its Agricultural Growth Program. These results have contributed to the strengthened institutional capacity of the Government of Ethiopia to manage coordinate and deliver quality Agricultural Growth Programming.
