Project Description
April 2015 – On 25 April an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu. The government has reported that 30 out of 75 districts are affected in the Western and Central Regions including districts in Kathmandu Valley. The epicentre is located 81 km northwest of Kathmandu. A number of large aftershocks have occurred since the first earthquake. To date over 3 000 deaths have been confirmed and over 6 000 people have been injured. These figures are expected to increase as more information becomes available. With DFATD's support Global Medic is helping to meet the emergency shelter water and protection needs of up to 5 000 families affected by the earthquake. Project activities include: (1) providing 30 tents to clinics hospitals schools and government buildings to replace damaged infrastructures; (2) providing psychosocial support and referral services for children; (3) distributing water purification units and hygiene kits; and (4) deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to map and assess damaged areas in need of humanitarian assistance.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project are: (1) improved access to emergency shelter; (2) improved psychosocial well-being of children; (3) increased access to water and hygiene items; and (4) improved crisis mapping to inform the humanitarian response. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
