Project Description
May 2015 - On April 25 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Nepal with the epicentre 81 km northwest of Kathmandu. The earthquake has affected over 8 million people displaced 2.8 million and has left more than 3.5 million Nepalese in need of food assistance. To date the Government of Nepal has confirmed over 8 600 deaths and 16 800 injured. On May 12 a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal northeast of Kathmandu and near its border with China. This aftershock caused additional damage and loss of life including throughout many areas already impacted by the April 25 earthquake. With DFATD's support the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) is helping to meet the water sanitation hygiene and shelter needs and support the livelihoods of up to 25 000 people affected by the earthquake. Project activities include: (1) distributing emergency shelter kits; (2) providing emergency relief supplies and water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) items; (3) providing psychosocial support and referral services; and (4) training to households on livestock and agriculture management.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project are: (1) improved access to emergency shelter materials; (2) increased access to emergency relief and WASH items; (3) increased access to psychosocial support and health services; (4) increased livelihoods opportunities. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
