Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). UNAIDS uses these funds along with other donors funding to achieve its mandate. As the United Nation’s (UN) principal advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS UNAIDS leads strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV providing treatment and care for people living with the disease reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the epidemic’s impact worldwide. UNAIDS works with countries to develop their national AIDS strategies. Canada’s support to UNAIDS is also an important complement to Canada’s support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Expected Results
The goals as stated by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) include: (1) sexual transmission of HIV reduced by half; (2) vertical transmission of HIV eliminated and AIDS-related maternal mortality reduced by half; (3) universal access to antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV who are eligible for treatment; (4) HIV-specific needs of women and girls are addressed in at least half of all national HIV responses; and (5) zero tolerance for gender-based violence is achieved.
