Project Description

February 2015 - Heavy seasonal rains in south-eastern Africa have led to serious flooding in Malawi and Mozambique damaging infrastructure and displacing tens of thousands of families. Overall more than one million people have been affected by the flooding of whom nearly 400 000 have been displaced from their homes. Damage to crops and the inability to replant until the flooding subsides further threatens longer-term food security in the affected areas particularly in Malawi. With support from DFATD and other donors the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is helping to meet the humanitarian needs of 57 000 flood-affected people in Malawi (42 000) and Mozambique (15 000) through financial support to the Malawian and Mozambican Red Cross Societies. Project activities include the provision of: (1) food packages to 1 900 vulnerable flood-affected households in Malawi; (2) safe water and sanitation for 3 000 households in Malawi and 2 900 households in Mozambique; (3) emergency healthcare for 7 660 households in Malawi and 3 000 households in Mozambique; and (4) shelter materials for 7 600 households in Malawi and 3 000 households in Mozambique.

Expected Results

The expected results for this project include: (1) improved access to food; (2) improved access to safe water and sanitation; (3) improved access to healthcare; and (4) improved access to shelter for flood-affected Malawians and Mozambicans. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crisis or acute food insecurity.
