Project Description
This project aims to improve the nutritional status of children under the age of five (350 000) and pregnant and lactating women (400 000) in Ethiopia by increasing access to quality nutrition services nutritious food and water and sanitation services (250 000 people and 25 000 households). Despite recent progress malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia and many children do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Malnutrition contributes to about half of all deaths of children under five years old. Activities include: (1) core nutrition interventions (such as nutrition education malnutrition detection access to supplementary feeding); and (2) access to nutritious food including nutrition-sensitive agricultural products (such as vegetables fruits milk) and water hygiene and sanitation.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project includes: (1) increased access and utilization of quality nutrition services including nutrition knowledge of pregnant and lactating women and children under five; (2) increased access and utilization of nutritious food including nutrition-sensitive agricultural productions particularly for women and children; and (3) increased access to water and sanitation services particularly for women and children.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (December 2020) included: (1) provided health and nutrition interventions such as maternal infant and young child nutrition training community-based management of acute malnutrition training and nutrition education to 763 337 participants of whom 449 102 pregnant and lactating women and caregivers; (2) conducted food security and livelihoods interventions covering various agricultural inputs including seeds chickens shoats bee hives and colonies and farm tools. As such provided 57 108 households (48% women) with crop seeds vegetables seeds and shoats; and (3) reached 110 780 community members (52% women) with water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions. They also benefited from small and large-scale construction and rehabilitation of water schemes and water facilities. At the end the project reached 671 791 direct beneficiaries. These results have improved the nutritional status of children and pregnant women by increasing access to quality nutrition services nutritious food and water and sanitation services.
