Project Description
The initiative supports technical vocational education and training (TVET) reform in Kenya helping create a strong demand-driven and industry-responsive training system in growing industries. Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is seeking to bridge the current skills gap in Kenya's demand-driven sectors by improving the quality and relevance of curricula the technical skills and knowledge of lecturers as well as improving the country's overall training infrastructure. This initiative helps Kenyans especially youth take advantage of increased employment opportunities in growing industries such as the agriculture and energy sectors particularly among marginalized populations in the northern drought-prone areas which are some of the poorest regions of the country. Activities include: (1) Developing industry-responsive and gender-sensitive competency-based training curricula; (2) Providing training delivered by experts from Canadian technical training institutions specializing in extractives and related sectors to 200 technical instructors including through the use of instructional technology; (3) Providing and install training equipment for Kenyan partner technical training institutions for the delivery of competency-based training; (4) Delivering leadership and management training by experts from Canadian technical training institutions to 100 administrators and governors at Kenyan partner technical training institutions; (5) Organizing workshops to engage 500 private and public sector TVET stakeholders in the implementation of TVET reform and to share best practices; and (6) Launching outreach and public awareness campaigns to promote skills training programs within local communities directly benefitting 2080 instructors administrators and governors private and public sector TVET stakeholders and students.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) Strengthened quality of industry-responsive skills training programs for youth male and female trainees at partner institutions (2) Increased effectiveness of partner institutions to deliver skills training programs that meet private sector needs to youth male and female trainees (3) Improved capacity of Kenyan Institutions and agencies to implement TVET reform initiatives.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) impacted 70 000 young women and men by exposing over 350 technical vocational education and training (TVET) trainers to new teaching methods; (2) improved the management of all 10 technical and vocational training institutions across Kenya; (3) enhanced the collaboration with over 100 industry representatives and they have partnered with local and Canadian partners to design and deliver modularized gender-sensitive competency-based training programs; (4) 17 new market-aligned courses were developed by the institutional partners and implemented across the 10 national polytechnic institutions; (5) developed 436 new occupational standards and competency-based curricula; and (6) a gender equality analysis considered the first in Kenya was conducted in all national TVET institutions. These activities are building the foundation to strengthen the quality of industry-responsive skills training programs for young women and men trainees at partner institutions and to increase the effectiveness of partner institutions in delivering skills training programs that meet private sector needs.
