Project Description
March 2015 – Ongoing conflicts in Darfur South Kordofan and Blue Nile States as well as an influx of refugees from Sudan have contributed to a significant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Some 6.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance including 3.1 million internally displaced people 700 000 refugees and asylum seekers 1.2 million malnourished children under the age of five and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Food security and malnutrition continue to be priority sectors for humanitarian assistance as well as health and sanitation needs. With DFATD’s support World Relief Canada is providing emergency water sanitation and hygiene and protection services to over 60 000 conflict-affected people in East Darfur. Project activities include: (1) constructing three new water distribution points rehabilitating three water yards and six hand pumps; (2) recruiting and training 90 water user committee members to manage water points; (3) providing 2 250 households with latrine slabs for constructing household latrines; (4) distributing relief items (jerry cans and bars of soap); and (5) constructing five semi-permanent child-friendly centres and training for 30 centre facilitators to promote safe interaction and mental health services to conflict-affected children and youth.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) increased awareness of the importance of proper hygiene to maintain and improve health; (3) increased access to sanitation facilities; (4) increased access to relief items; and (5) increased access to protection services.
