Project Description
March 2015 – Ongoing conflicts in Darfur South Kordofan and Blue Nile States as well as an influx of refugees from South Sudan have contributed to a significant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Some 6.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance including 3.1 million internally displaced people 700 000 refugees and asylum seekers 1.2 million malnourished children under the age of five and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Food security and malnutrition continue to be priority sectors for humanitarian assistance as well as health and sanitation needs. With DFATD’s support World Vision Canada is providing emergency health water sanitation and hygiene services to over 170 000 conflict-affected people in South Darfur. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating eight existing boreholes and drilling nine new boreholes benefitting 4 500 people; (2) training of nine community water committees totaling 90 people and training 54 hand pump mechanics; (3) constructing 600 emergency household latrines benefitting 3 600 people; (4) providing hygiene training to 100 volunteers and distributing hygiene kits to 1 000 vulnerable households; and (5) providing seven primary health care clinics with essential medicines to ensure safe deliveries neonatal and postnatal care.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water; (2) increased awareness of the importance of proper hygiene to maintain and improve health; (3) increased access to sanitation facilities; and (4) increased access to emergency health care. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
