Project Description
March 2015 – Violence continues in the north-eastern states of Nigeria where a state of emergency has been in effect since May 2013. An estimated 1.5 million people are displaced in the six north-eastern states. Provision of shelter food relief items protection as well as immediate action to improve sanitation and health conditions of the displaced is urgently needed. Food insecurity also persists in north-eastern Nigeria. Since 2013 the number of food insecure people has risen from 4.2 million to 4.8 million and the number of cases of severe malnutrition in children under 5 has doubled. With DFATD’s support Action Against Hunger is addressing the urgent needs of internally displaced people and host communities affected by violence in Yobe State. Project activities include: (1) provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (2) construction of latrines for health facilities and schools; (3) promotion of safe hygiene practices; and (4) provision of hygiene kits such as soap aqua tabs and sanitary pads.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to drinking water and sanitation; and (2) improved hygiene practices. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
