Project Description
March 2015 –Niger is facing a number of humanitarian challenges including food insecurity malnutrition population displacement epidemics and natural disasters. Due to security concerns in Mali the return of Malian refugees has largely ceased with 50 000 Malian refugees still residing in Niger. In addition worsening security and cholera outbreaks in the north east of Nigeria have resulted in the displacement of 105 000 people to Niger and additional influxes are expected in 2015. With DFATD’s support CARE Canada is addressing the urgent needs of 18 000 Nigerians fleeing violence in North-eastern Nigeria as well nd host communities in Diffa Niger. Activities include: (1) provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (2) construction of shelters; and (3) provision of seeds and tools.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to drinking water and sanitation; (2) improved hygiene practices; and (3) improved living conditions and livelihoods. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
