Project Description
March 2015 – Chad faces simultaneous acute emergencies: malnutrition recurrent disease epidemics and outbreaks cyclical floods drought and displacement affect 3.2 million people. With three major humanitarian crises at its borders notably Central African Republic (CAR) Nigeria and South Sudan Chad will continue to host refugees in 2015. CAR returnees and refugees are living in dire conditions in transit sites and in temporary camps in the south all of whom need access to protection nutrition health and water sanitation and hygiene and education. Food security has worsened due to population displacement and below-average seasonal rainfall mainly affecting the Sahel strip. With DFATD’s support Oxfam-Québec is providing emergency assistance to 11 800 Chadian returnees and 16 000 vulnerable host community households including access to water the provision of seeds and tools and cash transfers to improve their living conditions and livelihoods. Activities include: (1) provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (2) construction of family latrines; (3) provision of shelter kits and improved woodstoves; (4) provision of agricultural tools; and (5) cash for work fro women-headed households to cover their basic needs.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved livelihoods; (2) improved access to drinking water sanitation and hygiene; and (3) strengthened protection of women and girls against sexual violence. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
