Project Description
March 2015 - Despite an ongoing peace process between the government and numerous different armed groups humanitarian needs persist in Burma. Ongoing localized conflict and sporadic fighting continue between the government and rebel groups in Kachin Kayin Mon and Shan states and inter-communal tensions in Rakhine State persist. Throughout the country approximately 640 000 people are displaced with many living in temporary shelters and almost all are entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. With DFATD’s support the Hope International Development Agency is helping up to 18 227 displaced people in the conflict-affected areas of Kachin and Shan states by increasing access to safe shelter and improving water hygiene and sanitation services. Project activities include: (1) the provision of safe drinking water to 16 350 displaced people; (2) the provision of hygiene materials and training to 9 940 displaced people; (3) the construction or repair of shelter for 1 135 displaced people; (4) the construction of latrines benefiting 420 displaced people; and (5) the construction of gender-segregated bathing spaces and hand-washing facilities for 2 119 displaced people.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe drinking water and sanitation and hygiene facilities; and (2) increased access to safe and secure shelter. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
