Project Description
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) focuses on developing protecting and restoring sustainable livelihoods so that the integrity of societies that depend on farming livestock fish forests and other natural resources is not threatened by crises. FAO contributes to a quicker and more sustainable recovery of local food production while preserving development gains reducing dependency on aid and increasing self-reliance of crisis-affected populations. With the support of DFATD and other donors FAO is providing emergency assistance to 2.2 million people affected by conflict and acute food insecurity in Central African Republic and Somalia. Project activities include: (1) distributing agricultural inputs such as seeds tools and livestock; (2) providing training in agricultural techniques; (3) providing assistance for the rehabilitation of agricultural infrastructure; (4) providing cash-for-work activities; and (5) supporting authorities in monitoring reducing and managing risks specific to agriculture food and nutrition and preparing for emergencies.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased agricultural production; (2) increased access for food insecure women households and communities to adequate quantities of food; (3) increased access to interventions designed to promote greater self-sufficiency and reduce negative coping mechanisms; and (4) increased capacity of local authorities to reduce disaster-related risks and prepare for emergencies. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
