Project Description
December 2014 - Typhoon Hagupit (locally known as Ruby) made landfall in the Philippines on December 6 with maximum winds and gusts of up to 195 km/h. It closely followed the trajectory of Typhoon Haiyan that devastated the country only 13 months earlier. Hagupit killed 21 people and caused severe damage to infrastructure including homes roads schools and health centres in the east of Samar Island. As communities are still recovering from last year’s storm there are serious concerns about the humanitarian impact of this year’s strongest storm. With DFATD’s support Global Medic is providing immediate access to clean drinking water and hygiene support to 1 000 typhoon-affected families. The project also provides support to the humanitarian community and local governments to help identify priority needs.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project is improved access to clean water and hygiene support for typhoon-affected people. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crisis or acute food insecurity.
