Project Description

The project aims to increase agricultural production and food security in Warrap State through improved increased and diversified food production as well as by building the productive asset base of food insecure households (e.g. through greater livestock health management) in South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) women farmer-to-women farmer training; (2) increasing and diversifying vegetable production during seasonal dry periods; (3) cash for work activities to construct ponds for irrigation; and 4) nutrition training as well as farmer literacy and numeracy training.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased and improved agriculture and livestock production by women and food insecure households; and (2) increased adaptive and transformative capacity to address food-insecurity by women food-insecure households and communities.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project in August 2018 include: (1) 1 695 farmers (1 492 women) trained to cultivate and sell vegetables in local markets in South Sudan increasing their income and allowing them to buy medicines pay school fees for their children and purchase more food in the lean season; (2) 1 915 households now have access to water for irrigation in the dry season enabling them to grow food in times when shortages often begin; and (3) 360 farmers (63% women) engaged in rearing poultry with improved breeds leading to an increase in their sale values for eggs and meat. Overall this project increased food production and helped to transform women’s lives by increasing their incomes and ability to buy food in the lean season in Warrap South Sudan.
