Project Description

The project aims to establish Indonesia as a regional centre of actuarial excellence by working with high schools and universities the insurance and pensions industry professional actuarial associations and government agencies to strengthen the actuarial profession in Indonesia. Activities include: (1) strengthen undergraduate and graduate actuarial science programs at six Indonesian universities; (2) engage high school students through competitions and work and study opportunities; (3) provide undergraduate scholarships to women and men actuarial science students; and (4) provide workplace learning experiences for actuarial science students.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased equitable employment of female and male Indonesian accredited actuarial science and risk management graduates by Indonesian businesses universities and government agencies; and (2) strengthened actuarial science and risk management profession with attention to gender equality in Indonesia.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (October 2021) include: (1) strengthened communication information sharing and collaboration between key stakeholders specifically scientific actuaries partner universities insurance professionals actuarial science accreditation bodies and relevant Indonesian bodies such as the Indonesian Financial Services Authority the Finance Profession Supervisory Center the Society of Actuaries in Indonesia and the Ministry of Education and Culture; (2) established effective partnership arrangements with nine universities and with the Society of Actuaries in Indonesia; (3) helped 16 partner universities (full-fledged and partial partners) launched an actuarial science study program. One partner university launched a master of actuarial science program and three partner universities launched an actuarial science stream; (4) launched outreach activities to get high-school level math students to think about and consider getting into actuarial science. More than 48 718 students (of which 29 008 girls) and 5 787 teachers and parents (of which 3 494 women attended); (5) 15 lecturers (of which 10 women) completed their masters in actuarial science from the University of Waterloo; (6) forged110 sustainable industry-university linkages for students studying actuarial science. So far three partner universities have pioneered cooperative education in the country; (7) provided 480 student-years undergraduate scholarships (of which 258 young women) enrolled in eight partner universities; with a total disbursement of Can$2 086 885; (8) enrolled 2 983 students (55-60% women) in actuarial science streams in partner universities; (9) obtained nationally recognized credentials for 188 actuarial science graduates (of which 115 female); and (10) increased the number of fellows and associates of the society of actuaries in Indonesia from 381 in 2015 to 646 (341 fellows and 305 Associates).
