Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children (SRSG-VAC). The SRSG-VAC uses these funds along with other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate which derives from the conclusions of the 2006 UN Study on Violence Against Children. The SRSG is a global independent advocate in favour of the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children. The office mobilizes action and political support to maintain momentum around this agenda and generates renewed concern at the harmful effects of violence on children. The mandate of the SRSG is anchored in human rights promoting the universal ratification and effective implementation of core international conventions. The SRSG-VAC cooperates closely with human rights bodies and mechanisms with UN funds and programmes and specialized agencies and with regional organizations. She promotes cooperation with national institutions and civil society organizations including children and young people.
Expected Results
The expected accomplishments as stated by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children include: (1) promotion of the ratification and implementation of core child rights treaties; (2) policy dialogue to strengthen children's protection from violence; (3) increased awareness and consolidation of knowledge to accelerate progress in the prevention and elimination of violence against children; (4) maximized engagement with governments and regional institutions; (5) strengthened strategic alliances within and beyond the United Nations system including direct engagement with children; and (6) strengthened implementation of member states' commitments for children's protection from violence.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children through the support of the Government of Canada other international donors and from funds from the regular budget of the United Nations in 2014-2015 include: (1) a steady increase in the number of ratifications to the Optional Protocol on the sale of children child prostitution and child pornography now in force in 173 countries (as of 20 June 2016); (2) the promotion of new international standards including ILO Convention No. 189 (2011) concerning decent work for domestic workers and the United Nations Model Strategies and Practical Measures on the Elimination of Violence against Children in the Field of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice adopted by the General Assembly in resolution 69/194; (3) regional processes for the implementation of the recommendations in the study on violence against children were promoted through seven high-level regional consultations held in South and Central America the Caribbean South Asia the Pacific Europe and the Arab region; (4) six regional reports were issued and periodic review meetings held to assess and accelerate progress; and (5) five cross-regional round tables hosted to enhance cooperation on the prevention and elimination of violence. These have contributed to the objective of the organization which is to launch and support global initiatives to promote the prevention and elimination of violence against children and increase awareness political support and global action for the protection of children from all forms of violence.
