Project Description

This project is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad. Cuso International’s Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru Guyana Cameroon Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment entrepreneurial and life skills support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access by Canadian interns (young men and women) to Canadian labour market opportunities including in the field of international development; and (2) increased engagement of Canadian interns (young men and women) as global citizens in supporting international development in Canada and abroad.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) recruitment training in-country mentoring training and placement of 35 interns (30 female and 5 male) with developing country partners in five different countries; (2) development of an e-mentoring program (including the recruitment selection and training of e-mentors); (3) development and implementation of a reintegration program for returned interns; and (4) creation and dissemination of communications material related to the project.
